Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Mural?
A mural by definition is a painting that is done directly on a wall regardless of size or paint used by the artist. There are many types and applications of murals: these can be custom-painted by the artist, painted on canvas and hung like wallpaper, or digitally reproduced and enlarged to be hung like wallpaper using a self-stick adhesive to the wall surface. The possibilities are endless!
Can A Mural Be Painted On Any Surface?
Yes! Murals can be painted on a numerous surfaces ranging from concrete to wood, wallboard to canvas, and even outdoors on brick or fencing. The cost of the mural usually depends on the texture of the surface, however, since obviously it is much more difficult to paint on a rough surface (such as brick) than on a smooth wall.
How long does it take to paint a mural?
This depends on the size of the mural, the materials used, and the difficulty involved. A simple cartoon-like monkey hanging from a tree in a nursery might take just a few hours, while a very detailed landscape might take a month or more.
Do I need to get a building permit or permission from my HOA?
Most of the time, no. Unless you are planning on knocking down a wall or if the mural is visible to your neighbor or the general public, you should be fine not getting permission in advance. Of course, if you are renting the home or commercial space I do require you get a letter of permission from your landlord prior to any work commencing.
Will A Mural Increase The Value Of My Home?
In most cases, yes! This really depends on your home buyer's personal tastes, of course, but in most cases I've dealt with the home seller got more money for their home (or it just showed better) with the murals on the walls. Home builders also contract me to paint designs on the walls of their model homes to give the home more of a "wow" factor too!
Should I Ask My Interior Designer To Consult with You?
Although not necessary, working with a professional interior designer can be advisable because they can properly coordinate furniture, carpet, window treatments, etc. with the mural. Of course, I am always happy to work with interior designers so we can coordinate colors and make sure the finished room is exactly what you want!
How Much Does A Mural Cost?
A custom hand painted mural's cost depends upon several factors: Size, Complexity, Location, Surface, Detail and type of paint (Oil or Acrylic Paint). I work in both mediums, however I prefer to use oil paints in high-humidity situations (such as over a backsplash in a kitchen or bath) to ensure that the design will last for years to come. Since all murals are different in their complexity and size, I have come up with a simple calculation based on the square footage of the design multiplied by a difficulty factor of $10, $20, or $30 per square foot. Please see my Pricing Page for more details.
I cant' really afford a custom mural right now, or I have small children that will most likely change their minds later on. What are my options?
I am an affiliate distributor of Magic Murals, which is a company that carries self-stick murals in literally thousands of designs. You can also upload your own design! Magic Murals are a great alternative if a custom-painted mural is just not in your budget, or if you want something that can be easily taken down later on and replaced with another design.
I live outside of Colorado (or outside of a 60-mile radius of Loveland, CO). Can you still help me?
Of course! I often work with clients long distance and ship them the finished product, or I am happy to travel with an additional mileage expense. Alternatively, I do also travel to various locations as long as the client furnishes the lodging, travel expenses, and other considerations for the extent of the work. Contact me if you have any questions on this.
